http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?linkID=9241177&id=14993314&siteID=123112
Issue
There is an issue for users when working with the Compact Material Editor UI in 3ds Max 2011 and 3ds Max Design 2011. The issue may be apparent when using Put Material To Scene to update a material in the scene after you have edited the material.
The issue may be apparent as in the following workflow example:-
1. Create an object and assign a material to it using the Compact Material Editor.
2. Drag and drop the material sample slot to another slot to create a copy of the material in Compact Material Editor.Or,rename another material to the same as the one assigned to the object.
3. With the copied material selected, try to click the "Put Material to Scene" button.
Result: The Material does not update to scene, the ‘’Put Material to Scene’’ button is grayed out. Screenshot showing the issue is below:-
Solution
To workaround this issue, follow the steps below :-
1. Select an object that has the original material assigned to it. If there are many objects that share the material, then you need to select only one of them.
2. In Compact Material Editor, select the new material, then click the ‘’Assign Material To Selection’’ button to assign the new copied material to it. Choose ‘’Replace It’’ option when ‘’Assigning Material’’ dialog appears asking if you want to replace the material in scene.
